Yesterday 21st July 2022, National water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) fraternity in partnership with Bushenyi District leadership made an engagement meeting with all Stakeholders at Nyakabingo primary school – Kakanju Subcounty on how best Warugo project can start it’s implementation phrase scheduled on October 2022. Warugo water project is a 11 billion project expected to give clean and safe water to 100,000 people in four subcounties of Bitooma, Kyamuhunga, Kakanju and Ruhumuro . Warugo water project is estimated to produce 2.5 million litres of clean water each day and the surplus water after these targeted Subcounties is expected to be piped to Ruharo water plant in Bushenyi- Ishaka municipality.
Suffice to note; we appreciate NWSC for its strategic plan to provide safe and clean water for all citizens. NWSC strategic plan as a public Institution ably fulfills the ingredient of NRM party manifesto of gravitating “to provide clean and safe water for all”.
Pertinent to note, 33 children die every day due to diarrhhoea ( water- borne disease) , 3,575,000 million people succumb to diseases related to using unsafe water every year, more people have died from using unclean water in the past 100 years than any other cause. Therefore, the implementation of Warugo water project will go an extra mile to mitigate Bushenyi District Communities inaccessibility to clean and safe water.
Warugo water project once implemented will improve Education and fight household poverty in Bushenyi District. It’s reported that people spend six hours each day walking long distances to fetch water. Thus, if 100,000 people or also access clean and safe water , school going Children will have time to regularly and timely attend school, not fall ill due to water- borne diseases attributed to drinking un safe water which would otherwise make them to miss school or make parents lack fees because of paying medical bills to treat these water- borne diseases. Notably, the money which would be spent on treating water-borne diseases can be used in productive ventures to fight household poverty. Additionally, the time spent on walking long distances to fetch water can be concentrated on family productive activities to fight household poverty. Therefore, provision of safe and clean water in Communities is intricately linked with social- economic transformation of any society.
What about direct and indirect employment emanating from implementation of Warugo water project. The skilled and unskilled labour force will get jobs. The transport industry, the hard ware business , hotel industry that creates demand for food items , Rentals to house labour force etc will all benefit from this project.
To adumbrate it all, Warugo water project will jumpstart Bushenyi Community development and as Bushenyi people; we are ready to embrace it and give it a due support it deserves and we equally thank NWSC under auspices of Eng.Dr Silver Mugisha as it’s managing Director for identifying Bushenyi District’s exigent need to access clean and safe water that had always been our perpetual need and public outcry.
This is fantastic. Well done NWSC
