NWSC project to serve over 850,000 residents in Bukedi region

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) have flagged off works for Lot 2 of the Mbale Water Supply Project (Construction of Mbale Water Distribution System and Sanitation Facilities) aiming to serve over 850,000 residents in Mbale and surrounding areas with piped water.

Through its mandate, NWSC continues to implement a wide range of Water and sanitation (WATSAN) infrastructure development projects within 283 towns of operation across the country.

The government of Uganda (GOU) received project funds from the World Bank towards the implementation of the Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP). Part of the funding is to be used to finance the construction of the Mbale Water Supply and Sanitation Project.

The Government of Uganda, with financial support from development partners, funds major projects to provide safe water for human consumption and to support economic development aimed at eradicating poverty.

These efforts, according to NWSC align with the government’s deliberate focus on advancing progress towards achieving the Unoted Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The Mbale Water Supply and Sanitation System project aims at providing medium to long-term solutions to the water supply challenges in Mbale city and the neighbouring areas and the rural growth centres of Tirinyi, Kibuku, Kadama, Budaka, Butaleja, and Busolwe.

The overall project strategy aims to meet Mbale’s water demand for the year 2040.  It includes a systematic approach to increasing potable water supply while protecting the watershed, improving sanitary conditions, and serving the urban poor.

Lot 1 includes construction of Mbale Water Supply and Sewerage Systems while Lot 2 covers the construction of Mbale Water Distribution System and Sanitation Facilities.

Package 2 implemented by the Ministry of Water and Environment comprises the Construction of water supply and sanitation systems in 2 Lots in which Lot 1 includes construction of Tirinyi, Kibuku, Kadama and Budaka water supply and sanitation system and Lots 2 includes construction of Butaleja and Busolwe water supply and sanitation system.

NWSC signed the contract and flagged off works for Lot 2 implemented by NWSC, The Construction of the Mbale Water Distribution System and Sanitation Facilities.

The works for the construction of the Mbale water distribution system and sanitation facilities are expected to commence by 1st October 2024, and be completed by 31st December 2025. The works will be executed by China Communications Construction Company Ltd.
