NWSC TEAM AND BUSHENYI- ISHAKA MUNICIPALITY STAKEHOLDERS MADE ASSESSMENT TOUR OF POSSIBLE SITES TO SET UP CENTRALISED SEWERAGE SYSTEM

Yesterday 28th July 2022; NWSC team from Head office and NWSC team from Ankole sub region were in Bushenyi – Ishaka municipality(BIM) following Greater Bushenyi stakeholders’ request  to managing Director – NWSC Eng.Dr.Mugisha Silver about Bushenyi – Ishaka Municipality exigent need to have sewerage service . Yesterday’s meeting took place at NWSC Area offices at Bushenyi and was chaired by Regional Principal Public Relations officer- Mr.Paul Kahiigi and attended by NWSC team  lead by the project Engineer and Senior Manager and Capital Development – Eng. Denis Taremwa, Dr.Irene Nansubuga- Head of Water quality Department, Eng.Brenda Owomugisha- NWSC Head office, General Manager Eng Francis Kateeba Atwoki- Technical Advisor – Ankole Sub Region , Mr.Christopher Ebanyu- Regional Senior Surveyor , Eng Ivan Magomu- Area Engineer Bushenyi and Bushenyi – Ishaka municipality stakeholders inter alia ; Town Clerk, Deputy Town Clerk, Deputy Mayor  Senior Environment officer. The meeting was intended to evaluate acceptability by the user community and make a joint topographic survey  proposed sites and assess their suitability of the said cause.

In the meeting; Eng Sam Kiggundu – Area Manager Bushenyi welcomed the project as it’s going to be first of it’s kind to be implemented in Ankole  sub region  and went on to say that because of the poor terrain of BIM area , one system may not serve both Bushenyi and Ishaka towns, therefore, there will be a need  of number of different stations and boosters. Eng.Denis Taremwa- the Team Leader, emphasized need for a centralized sewerage system in Bushenyi- Ishaka municipality due to its rapid growth that calls for improved sanitation levels .Eng Kateeba Atwoki- Technical Advisor- Ankole sub region said is very happy to see both sides of NWSC and Bushenyi- Ishaka municipality  stakeholders meeting to brainstorm on how best this project can be timely implemented .Eng Kateeba went further to submit to say that NWSC loves to have a gravity flow system in order to minimize the cost of operation and maintenance but where not possible they will have to boost, Dr.Irene Nansubuga-Head of  Water quality Department implored BIM stakeholders to encourage people to move away from pit-latrines to water borne systems to avoid ground water contamination, water borne systems promote re-using  of water to save our drying streams and lastly said NWSC is studying on  how to improve their  digesters to generate electricity from fecal sludge and generate energy for economic growth and opportunities. BIM Town Clerk and Deputy Mayor assured NWSC team of their full support from BIM Council, Community and Technical team  because improved sanitation levels make municipality develop and  clean .

The team traversed the whole of BIM and visited eight points for NWSC team to identify the most  efficient sites to put up sewerage sites  vis -as-vis the costs therein and topographic engineering needs. NWSC team promised to study field findings and make exigent implementation of the project.

Bushenyi- Ishaka municipality stakeholders requested NWSC team to extend their sincere appreciation to  the Managing Director of NWSC Eng.Dr Silver Mugisha for having honoured their request timely as Greater Bushenyi when they tendered  it in his office in May 2022 to have Sewerage service in BIM  and saluted his solid performance at NWSC and  his continued fulfillment of strategic plans of NWSC as a public institution.
